What does your card machine really cost?
Headline rates don't tell you much. Put in the numbers from your latest statement and see everything added up — the monthly total, the yearly total and your true effective rate, which is the figure to compare providers on.

Blended vs split rates
Some providers charge one rate for every card; others charge different rates for debit, credit, business and overseas cards. If yours is split, work out a blended figure: total percentage fees ÷ total takings.
Per-payment fees add up
A few pence per payment looks tiny, but on lots of small sales — coffees, newspapers, bus fares — it can cost more than the percentage itself.
Monthly charges hide in the small print
PCI compliance, minimum monthly service charges, account fees and terminal rental all count. A low rate with high fixed charges can cost more at lower takings.
Separate terminal leases
A terminal lease can be a separate contract from the card processing, with its own length and exit fee. Check both before you switch.
